Report 01 · Know thy self

Have you noticed how easily other people get inside your head?

Not strangers. The ones who watched you long enough to learn which button does what, and then stopped telling you they were pressing it.

Why

Everybody has a blind spot, and it is never where they are looking. It sits in the gap between the person you believe you are being and the person you are actually being — and you cannot see into that gap from the inside, because you are standing in it.

Your blind spot is not a mystery to everyone. It is only a mystery to you.

Other people can see it perfectly well. Most of them are decent enough to say nothing. The ones who are not do not need to understand you at all; they only need to know which lever moves you. That is a far smaller thing to learn, and it can be learnt in a fortnight.

People do not need to understand you to use you. They only need to know which string is loose.

Ordinarily you find your own blind spot the slow way: by walking into it, at speed, in front of people, usually more than once. April's entire purpose is to hand you that map before the collision rather than after it.

Self-knowledge is the one subject where trial and error is paid for in years.

What

Thirteen questions, then one call with Fin. That is the whole of what is asked of you. What comes back is not a four-letter label and not a score out of a hundred — it is a reading of how you are built: where you are strong enough to be careless, where you are thin enough to be moved, and the specific mechanism behind the mistake you keep making and keep explaining differently each time.

How

April tells you the how in eleven pages.

Written to be read once slowly and then again a month later, when you have had the chance to catch yourself doing it.

You will meet somebody who does not understand your music. You would rather know how you are tuned before they do.
